Salāh (الصَّلَاة) is one of the most important acts of worship in Islam. It establishes a special connection between Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) and His servant. Every Muslim should strive to perform Salāh correctly and learn its essential acts.
The Wājibāt of Salāh (وَاجِبَات الصَّلَاة) are the necessary acts that should be observed during prayer. These acts help a Muslim perform Salāh according to the manner taught by the Prophet ﷺ.
What Does Wājib Mean?
Wājib (وَاجِب) refers to an essential act that should be performed in Salāh. Some acts of prayer are fundamental and obligatory (Farḍ – فَرْض), while others are necessary (Wājib) for completing and correctly performing the prayer.
Therefore, Muslims should learn the correct method of Salāh and pay attention to its essential acts during prayer.
Important Wājibāt of Salāh
1. Recitation of Sūrah Al-Fātiḥah
Reciting Sūrah Al-Fātiḥah (سُورَةُ الْفَاتِحَة) at its prescribed place in Salāh is among the important acts of prayer. Sūrah Al-Fātiḥah is a great Sūrah of the Qur’ān (الْقُرْآن), and every Muslim should try to recite it correctly.
2. Recitation of the Qur’ān After Sūrah Al-Fātiḥah
In the prescribed rak‘ahs (رَكَعَات), reciting another Sūrah or some verses (Āyāt – آيَات) from the Qur’ān after Sūrah Al-Fātiḥah is also among the important acts of Salāh. A Muslim should try to recite the Qur’ān with correct pronunciation (Tajweed – تَجْوِيد).
3. Maintaining the Proper Order of Recitation
In Salāh, Sūrah Al-Fātiḥah is recited first, followed by another Sūrah or verses from the Qur’ān. The acts of Salāh should be performed according to their prescribed order (Tartīb – تَرْتِيب), and unnecessary changes in this order should be avoided.
4. Performing Rukū‘
Rukū‘ (الرُّكُوع) is an important part of Salāh. During Rukū‘, the worshipper bows properly and glorifies Allah by saying:
سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الْعَظِيمِ(Glory be to my Lord, the Almighty)
Rukū‘ should not be performed hastily; it must be done with calmness and tranquility (Ṭuma’nīnah –
5. Standing Straight After Rukū‘ (I‘tidāl)
After rising from Rukū‘, the worshipper should stand upright properly (I‘tidāl – اِعْتِدَال), saying:
سَمِعَ اللَّهُ لِمَنْ حَمِدَهُ ، رَبَّنَا وَلَكَ الْحَمْدُ(Allah hears whoever praises Him. Our Lord, to You belongs all praise)
Instead of moving immediately into Sujūd, one should first stand straight with tranquility.
6. Performing Sujūd
Two prostrations (Sujūd – السُّجُود) are performed in every rak‘ah. Sujūd represents the ultimate humility and submission of a servant before Allah. During Sujūd, one glorifies Allah by saying:
سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الْأَعْلَى(Glory be to my Lord, the Most High)
Sujūd should be performed correctly and with tranquility.
7. Sitting Between the Two Prostrations (Jalsah)
After the first Sujūd, the worshipper sits before performing the second Sujūd. This sitting is known as Jalsah (الْجَلْسَة). One should avoid rushing and remain calm in this position as well, making the supplication:
رَبِّ اغْفِرْ لِي ، رَبِّ اغْفِرْ لِي(O Lord, forgive me; O Lord, forgive me)
8. Maintaining the Proper Order of Salāh
All the acts of Salāh should be performed in their prescribed order (Tartīb – تَرْتِيب): Standing (Qiyām – قِيَام), recitation (Qirā’ah – قِرَاءَة), Rukū‘, standing after Rukū‘, Sujūd, sitting between the two prostrations, and the second Sujūd.
9. Sitting in Qa‘dah
Sitting at the prescribed points in Salāh is essential. This sitting is called Qa‘dah (الْقَعْدَة). In a three- or four-rak‘ah prayer:
- First Sitting: Qa‘dah Ūlā (الْقَعْدَةُ الْأُولَى) after the second rak‘ah.
- Final Sitting: Qa‘dah Akhīrah (الْقَعْدَةُ الْأَخِيرَة) at the end of the prayer.
10. Reciting Tashahhud
During Qa‘dah, At-Taḥiyyāt (التَّحِيَّات), also known as Tashahhud (التَّشَهُّد), is recited:
11. Observing the First Qa‘dah
In a three- or four-rak‘ah prayer, Qa‘dah Ūlā is performed after the second rak‘ah. After reciting Tashahhud, the worshipper stands for the remaining rak‘ahs. If an essential act is accidentally missed, the prescribed Islamic method should be followed to correct it.
12. The Final Qa‘dah
At the end of Salāh, the final Qa‘dah (Qa‘dah Akhīrah) is performed. During it, Tashahhud, Aṣ-Ṣalāt ‘alān-Nabī / Durood (الصَّلَاةُ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ), and prescribed supplications (Du‘ā’ – دُعَاء) are recited before concluding with Taslīm (التَّسْلِيم – As-Salāmu ‘Alaykum wa Raḥmatullāh).
What Should You Do If You Forget a Wājib in Salāh?
Human beings can make mistakes. If a Wājib act is accidentally missed during Salāh, Islam provides a method for correction: Sajdah Sahw (سَجْدَةُ السَّهْو – Prostration of Forgetfulness).
Note: Not every mistake has the same ruling. If you are unsure about a particular mistake, consult a qualified and trustworthy Islamic scholar (‘Ālim –
Avoid Rushing During Salāh (Ṭuma’nīnah)
Salāh should not be performed hastily. There must be Ṭuma’nīnah (طُمَأْنِينَة – tranquility and pause) during Rukū‘, Sujūd, and all positions between them. Salāh is standing directly before Allah, so every movement should be executed calmly and intentionally.
How Can You Develop Khushū‘ in Salāh?
Correcting the outward actions of Salāh is important, but concentration of the heart—Khushū‘ (الْخُشُوع)—is equally essential.
To develop Khushū‘ in Salāh:
- Remember the Majesty of Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ).
- Try to understand the meanings of the Arabic recitations.
- Minimize unnecessary thoughts and distractions.
- View Salāh as a blessed connection with Allah rather than a routine burden.
- Perform every posture calmly instead of rushing to finish.
The Importance of Salāh
Salāh holds the central pillar status (‘Imād ad-Dīn – عِمَادُ الدِّينِ) in a Muslim’s life. It connects a person with Allah and encourages righteousness, patience (Ṣabr – صَبْر), and God-consciousness (Taqwā – تَقْوَى).
Allah commands in the Holy Qur’ān:
وَأَقِيمُوا الصَّلَاةَ“And establish prayer…”
Learning the Farḍ, Wājib, and Sunnah Acts
Every Muslim should understand the distinct levels of actions in prayer:
- Farḍ (فَرْض) – Obligatory actions.
- Wājib (وَاجِب) – Necessary actions.
- Sunnah (سُنَّة) – Prophetic traditions.
Seeking guidance from the Qur’ān and Sunnah through reliable Islamic scholars ensures our worship remains sound and accepted.
Conclusion
Salāh is not merely a series of physical movements; it is a profound act of worship to strengthen one’s relationship with Allah.
May Allah enable us to remain steadfast in Salāh, perform it correctly, grant us Khushū‘ (خُشُوع) in our worship, and accept all our prayers.
Āmīn (آمين).
