umrah transport cost

A full week of Umrah ground transport for a family of four costs less than one economy seat on the flight there.

Every cost guide I read before my first trip gave the fares in riyals and left me to convert them at the gate. This one does the arithmetic. Every figure below is a fixed per car fare from a Nusuk registered company, converted into US, British, Canadian and Australian money at the rates stated in the next section, so the number you read is the number you budget.

I have paid these fares on six trips from the US and the UK, and the arithmetic still holds.

Exchange Rates Used in This Breakdown

The Saudi riyal is pegged to the US dollar, so the USD column never moves. The other three drift a few percent a year, and the rates below are the mid market rates on 29 September 2026.

  • 1 USD = 3.75 SAR, fixed by the peg
  • 1 GBP = 4.95 SAR
  • 1 CAD = 2.74 SAR
  • 1 AUD = 2.47 SAR

Your card will settle 2 to 3 percent worse than these, which is covered at the end.

Airport Transfer Cost

A private car from Jeddah Airport to a Makkah hotel is SAR 250 for a Camry, which is USD 67, GBP 51, CAD 91 or AUD 101 for the whole car. A seven seat Staria is SAR 300, or USD 80, GBP 61, CAD 109, AUD 121. The fare covers fuel, tolls and the driver waiting inside the terminal, and it is the same at 2 am as at 2 pm.

Madinah Airport to a Madinah hotel is shorter and cheaper at SAR 150 for a Camry, which is USD 40, GBP 30, CAD 55 or AUD 61, and SAR 200 for a Staria.

I book the Jeddah Airport to Makkah car before flying because the same trip from the airport taxi rank starts at the same price and is negotiated upward once the bags are in the boot.

Makkah to Madinah Taxi Cost

A Makkah to Madinah taxi is SAR 450 in a Camry, which is USD 120, GBP 91, CAD 164 or AUD 182, and SAR 600 in a Staria, which is USD 160, GBP 121, CAD 219 or AUD 243. The road is about 450 km, fuel, tolls and two rest stops are inside the fare, and the return leg costs the same.

Divided by four passengers, the Camry works out at USD 30, GBP 23, CAD 41 or AUD 46 a head, which is the number to compare against any per seat quote you are given.

Ziyarat Cost in Each City

A half day ziyarat loop around Makkah is SAR 200 in a Camry, which is USD 53, GBP 40, CAD 73 or AUD 81, and SAR 250 in a Staria. The Madinah loop is SAR 150, which is USD 40, GBP 30, CAD 55 or AUD 61, and SAR 200 in a Staria. The driver waits at each site, so the fare is for the car and the time, not per stop.

Local Rides Between Hotel and Haram

A short ride inside Makkah or Madinah costs SAR 20 to 50, which is USD 5 to 13, GBP 4 to 10, CAD 7 to 18 or AUD 8 to 20. Ride apps charge about SAR 2 to 3 per kilometre and rise after each prayer. A hotel within walking distance of the mosque removes this line entirely, and it is the one transport cost that hotel choice controls.

Full Trip Transport Budget

The table below is a seven night trip in via Jeddah and out via Madinah, in a Camry, with both ziyarat loops and SAR 300 set aside for ten local rides.

For a family of four that is USD 100, GBP 76, CAD 137 or AUD 152 per person for the whole week. For a couple it is USD 200, GBP 152, CAD 274 or AUD 304 each. A Staria for a family of six or seven adds SAR 400 to the car total and drops the per person figure further.

Package Transport Prices Against Booking Direct

Agents’ packages price transport per seat, usually USD 60 to 100 a person for the airport and intercity legs on a shared coach, with ziyarat sold separately. For a family of four that is USD 240 to 400 before ziyarat, against USD 320 for the same legs in a private Camry with both ziyarat loops included, leaving when you choose.

The package wins for a solo pilgrim. The private car wins from two passengers up, and by a wide margin from four.

Fees That Change the Final Number

Three charges sit outside the fares and catch pilgrims from every country.

  • Foreign transaction fees of 2 to 3 percent on most US, UK, Canadian and Australian cards, so a SAR 1,500 total costs about USD 410 on the statement, not 400
  • Dynamic currency conversion, where a card machine offers to charge in your home currency at a rate 4 to 6 percent worse than the peg, so choose SAR every time
  • Deposits, which a registered company does not ask for, so any request for money before pickup is a cost the fares above do not include

Paying the driver on arrival, by card in riyals or in cash, keeps the total at the figures in the table. On my last four trips the best Umrah taxi I booked charged exactly what the chat said, in riyals, with nothing taken before the car arrived.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a 7-day Umrah package cost?

From the US or Canada about USD 1,800 to 3,000 per person and from the UK about GBP 1,200 to 2,200, with Australia around AUD 3,000 to 4,500, for economy flights, a three star hotel, the visa and shared coach transport. Flights and hotel make up most of that, and transport is the smallest line.

What is the cheapest month for Umrah?

The weeks between the Hajj season and Ramadan, which in 2026 means September to November and again in January 2027, before Ramadan begins in February. Flights and hotels fall 20 to 40 percent in those months. Fixed taxi fares do not change, so the whole saving comes from the flight and the room.

What is the price of an Umrah package in 2026?

Ten day packages run about USD 2,000 to 3,500 from the US, GBP 1,300 to 2,500 from the UK, CAD 2,800 to 4,800 from Canada and AUD 3,200 to 5,500 from Australia, depending on hotel distance from the Haram and the season. Ramadan packages sit at the top of each range.

Is the Haramain train cheaper than a taxi from Makkah to Madinah?

For one or two people, yes. An economy seat is about SAR 150 to 230, or USD 40 to 61, each way. For four people the seats cost SAR 600 to 920 before the taxis to and from both stations, so a SAR 450 private car is cheaper and door to door.

Do children pay for seats in an Umrah taxi?

No. A private car is priced per vehicle, so a child in a parent’s lap or in a seat costs nothing extra, and a family of two adults and three children pays the same Camry fare as two adults alone. Package coaches charge per seat, and most bill children over two at the adult rate.
